self-love for your jewelry

What’s even easier to put off and forget than your own SELF CARE?

*Self care for your jewelry *

“Is that even a really thing?” you might ask, and with good reason. But I'm here to tell you that it is and the benefits are major!

Part of the allure of a fresh new piece of bling is the way that it *sparkles* - right? I don't think anyone will argue with me on that one. But all too soon, that can fade, and we may not always notice, but it does. The reality is that gold is the only natural metal that doesn't develop (an also natural) patina.

While some of us love that slight darkening and deepening of color, there's something so satisfying about wiping it away to reveal that sparkling surface, once again.

There are a few ways to achieve that brightness, varying from polishing cloths and compounds, to DIY methods that are tried and true. At Elizabeth Leflar, we use and recommend both!

By far, the easiest method to remove oxidation from your jewelry is the Coca Cola method. Because Coca Cola is mildly acidic (yes, I know that it doesn't taste like it - thank you, buckets of sugar!), it can clean that tarnish right off. Just set your jewelry in a small cup of new or old Coca Cola, and leave it overnight. You’ll wake up to bright and shiny, blinging bling.

Another, but related, method is to use the juice from half a lemon, mixed into a paste with a teaspoon of baking soda. Use a soft cloth and gently wipe your jewelry with this paste, before rinsing and drying it with another soft cloth. Be sure that nothing you're using is abrasive and going to scratch your jewelry's surface.

Finally, I swear by the little pre-treated, tight-bond cellular foam pads that are available below. Perfect for on-the-go polishing and touch-ups, these babies wipe away any tarnish with virtually no elbow-grease, at all. I like to keep 1 or 2 in my wallet, so that it's always on hand, wherever I go.
